The Mitten (Week 2)

For our Mitten large group activity (which we did with our Tuesday/Thursday Class a few weeks ago), we will tell the story of the mitten with pictures from the book. The students will then be given a mask of one of the animals in the story. We found these on Jan Brett's website:  http://www.janbrett.com/mitten_masks_main.htm. We will hold out a blanket over our large mitten shape taped on the floor and sing to the tune of The Farmer and the Dell:

The mitten in the snow
The mitten in the snow
Help us please. . . so we don't freeze
The mitten in the snow
Carter squeezes in
Carter squeezes in
Help us please. . . so we don't freeze
The mitten in the snow
Once everyone in the whole class is under the sheet we will all sneeze "Ah, Ah, Ah, Chooo!!!!!" And everyone will rush out of the "mitten" and back to their seat.

When we did it with the Monday/Wednesday class, they loved it! It will be fun to do it again. We've also taken some of the small group activities with specific curriculum components and created new but similar activities. For example, we did an activity with the students where they counted and created patterns with the mittens. This time, they kiddo's that weren't in their group that day will also get to do so with little animals that they can put and pull out of a pair of gloves.

Where do the tire-tread paintings come in? You may see an activity that seems a little different from other topics of the week. Here's where we come in with 'child interest' (although many times we can do it and it may not even be noticeable). We've got some monster truck lovers in our class! Next month we are going to have a Birthday Party large group. The kids are talking about their birthdays and wanting crowns and parties (even when they're birthday is not till next November!) so we're going to find a academic way to celebrate it for everyone! Happy Birthday Class!

 * We don't ever post pictures of students (unless they're indiscernible to who it is) so our pictures to post are limited. I'm trying to figure out a way to share all the ones we take of the students throughout the year at the end of the year. I'll let you know what we figure out!
